But, my initial thought was that as Nelly starts singing (gradually changing from thin to confident voice)Johnny is confirmed that the woman singing by his side is surely his wife (since the duo have performed together before war). I think the camera also shows her concentration camp tattoo (I don't remember whether Johnny sees it). They both are in phase of denial throughout the narrative (he about the horrors inflicted on his wife & Nelly on her husband's betrayal), but I think when Nelly walks away, she isn't going to hold onto past and has risen like a phoenix.
